NDCS - Hands Up

4th Maidenhead Brownies are busy making their Unit a deaf friendly place. Their activities so far this term have included learning to sign the Brownie Promise, understanding what it's like not being able to hear what is going on around you and they will be ending the term with a loud party.

Book Aid International (Ubuntu: I am because you are)

4th Caversham Brownies, Reading, Berkshire, have been changing the world by supporting Book Aid International (Ubuntu: I am because you are). The majority of our Brownies love reading books.
Raising awareness:
We used materials downloaded from the Changing the World website plus some items from the Girlguiding resource "school days." The Rainbows also had reading tents. We read out a summarised version of the work of Book Aid from page 10-11 of the booklet "How will you change the world?" to our church congregation at the family service/Brownie church parade and performed our play to them. This little play highlights the need for books in Third World countries.
Raising money:
The Brownies performed the play again to parents at our last Brownie meeting of term and held a collection. They also made cakes and brought books along to sell. Total money made was £69.74.

1st Lambourn Valley Guides have completed a Changing the World project for Book Aid International. The girls raised £68 by holding a reading tent event in Lambourn library. We managed to fit a tent into the library and decorated it. We had a cake stall, African mask making and stories in the tent.

Project Bihar

2nd Warfield Brownies have chosen to support Project Bihar helping to build a permanent school in India for children affected by the monsoon floods. The Brownies will be donating any money they earn from doing good turns during half term.

Save the Children

1st Thatcham Brownies adopted the Newbury Branch of Save the Children, and to date have raised £166.88 which included a day selling cakes and crafts all made by them. They are also hoping to raise more money by holding a sponsored silence at the end of term. Hannah Marsh, Assistant Brownie Guider said, “The girls worked tremendously hard in the weeks running up to the day; they made a huge range of crafts, including badges, magnets, greetings cards and gift boxes, and baked and decorated cakes. In addition, they learnt about the work that Save the Children do, and how the funds they raised would be used. This was done using the resources provided as part of the project, which were very well pitched to be fun for the girls but also very informative – e.g. Saving Lives Bingo. Finally, the girls practiced how to run a shop – including welcoming customers and carrying out a sale”.

Plan UK

3td Crowthorne Brownies have held a photo exhibition and raised £75. The theme of the photograph exhibition was "What upsets you about the lives of girls in poor countries?" and all of the photos were planned, arranged and taken by the Brownies themselves.
